40s, quited my job that because my body and mind were tired
I processed my resignation from the company in September 2023. I joined the company in September 2020, so it's been exactly three years. Although I've quit a job where I was working perfectly fine before too, but this time feels different. Perhaps it's the pressure that comes with being in my 40s. The fact that I have a child that is also a different factor. The fact that my wife and I are both working and that I can rely on her is rather comforting.
The most unsettling part of this resignation process was quitting without having another job lined up. Because of the age of being in my 40s, I was worried about how difficult it would be to find a new job. But while working at the company, it was hard to look for other jobs and mentally difficult to have peace of mind. Although I wanted to quit, I want to thank my wife for supporting my decision.
1. Three hours just commuting... Time wasted on the subway
The company where I worked was located on Dosan-daero in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Geographically speaking, it wasn't very convenient for transportation. It was far from where I live in northern Gyeonggi-do as well. Living in Goyang City, Gyeonggi-do took me about an hour and a half just to commute to work.
2. Every day is deadline pressure.
Kim Soo-jung who drew Dooly once appeared on TV recalling when she fell into a slump long ago due to daily deadlines which made her question "why am living?". One reason why decided to resign is because this isn't life? What kind of life can you call not even seeing your child for an hour each day?
3. Uncertain Future
One of my grievances while working at the company was my salary. The market is saturated with media outlets, and there's a widespread perception that it's essentially a declining industry. Therefore, the average salary for journalists is not as high as it used to be. It doesn't compare well even with general or medium-sized companies.
Because of this, many talented journalists leave the media industry and join corporate PR teams. One can't just criticize the behavior of suddenly jumping into a PR team after performing journalistic duties such as uncovering corporate corruption or exposing wrongdoings - there's a huge difference in salaries.
In any case, dissatisfaction built up during my work life without an outlet for resolution. Eventually I lost heart and decided to quit. Now is the time when I need to think more intensely about what I should do next.
